Must-see places in Tenerife (part 2)

In Tenerife there are many great places, as we have already shown you in the last blog post. Since the island has always been a centre of commerce and exchange of international culture, it influenced on the development of our archipelago. Today you can still find traces and legacies of that time. Centuries of history, architecture, contemporary and classic artworks characterise the historic quarters. Let’s go on an expedition, because today we introduce you to some of these beautiful must-see places.

Historic District of La Laguna

San Cristóbal La Laguna

It is actually a must to start our list with the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The historic centre of La Laguna is one of the most visited in Tenerife. On the one hand because of the special atmosphere that is breathed in its streets and on the other hand because of its monuments, churches and cozy corners. Visit the site or simply enjoy the “La Laguna vibes“ of the university city, open to culture, commerce and arts.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital of the island

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

A cosmopolitan city where avant-garde and history go hand in hand to create unique urban spaces. A good example is the Auditorium of Tenerife, a modern landmark of the city that is located just a few metres from the historic Castillo de San Cristóbal, popularly known as Castillo Negro. Definitely added to your visit to the capital must be the large parks such as García Sanabria, Palmetum or the iconic beach Playa Las Teresitas. All in all, an oasis of possibilities!

La Orotava, a large municipality

La Orotava

Welcome to the largest municipality of Tenerife. Centuries-old traditions such as the famous flower and sand carpets, Las Alfombras, are celebrated here. You must also visit historic buildings such as the Casa de los Balcones with the beautiful Canarian wooden balconies. Crowned by Mount Teide and with a rich artistic, natural and historical heritage, La Orotava is a must when visiting the north of the island.

Puerto de la Cruz, a part of you

Puerto de la Cruz

The jewel on the north coast of Tenerife is one of the most visited places. The fishing atmosphere, walks along the seaside promenade of San Telmo, big festivals, the cozy streets and alleyways, its friendly inhabitants… All this makes Puerto de la Cruz unique… Of course, we have to mention emblematic places such as Lago Martiánez, a work of the artist César Manrique, or Loro Parque, which has been voted the best zoo in the world by Tripadvisor users.

Garachico, natural pools guarded by a large rock

Garachico

If you are looking for natural swimming pools formed by lava centuries ago, then Garachico is your place to go. There was indeed an eruption of the volcano Trevejo. Much of the city has been damaged, but after reconstruction, it looks even more beautiful today than ever before. A stroll through its cobbled streets followed by a delicious meal to taste the famous cuisine with fresh fish and seafood is also a must.

Now you know some of the places that you must visit when you come to Tenerife. But there is even more! Take a look at all the municipalities of the island, 31 unique areas to discover… your trip starts here!

Mueca 2018 – art conquers the streets of Puerto de la Cruz

People rush through the streets. What’s happening? You hear laughter, applause, and amazements of fascination… Ah, an event! But not just any… Puerto de la Cruz celebrates the International Street Art Festival Mueca!

International Street Art Festival Mueca 2018

From May 10th to 13th, up to 60 artists will be performing in Puerto de la Cruz to transform the historic coastal city in the north of Tenerife into a large stage. Music, comedy, theatre, circus and many other disciplines await you throughout the city. You may have some questions now. How do I get to Mueca? Where are all the stages? And the programme? Let’s explain you everything!

What is Mueca… Mueca is you!

Mueca means grimace in English and is much more than an international event. Mueca is a movement and initiative of the entire city that is looking forward to welcoming all the international artists.

From jugglers, acrobats, comedians to avant-garde musicians, a great time awaits you! Also for families with children many shows and innovative events are offered. Mueca is for everybody!

Where is Mueca?

As mentioned before, the Mueca Festival will take place as every year in Puerto de la Cruz, in the beautiful coastal town in the north of Tenerife. The historic centre merges with modern projects such as Puerto Street Art, which transforms the city into a large open-air museum.

How to get to Puerto de la Cruz and Mueca?

You have several opportunities to get to the Festival Mueca:

By public transport: The buses (guaguas) of Titsa are ideal if you don’t stay in Puerto de la Cruz and do not want to drive a car. You can check their website to look for the appropriate lines to get to Puerto de la Cruz without complications.

By Taxi: Servitaxi can take you directly from your hotel or your accommodation to the city centre. It’s the most comfortable way, as you’ll be picked up right from where you are.

By car: Parking in the city centre won’t be easy. Therefore, it is advisable to search for a parking space nearby, then going to the centre on foot or by taxi. We recommend these three (for free): Centro Salud, Los Cachazos and La Paz. You can also park in a parking garage (fee). In that case we recommend you Centro Comercial Martiánez and Plaza de Europa.

As Mueca is also an eco-friendly festival, we recommend you to share a vehicle with your friends and acquaintances.

The stages and places to go at Mueca?

In the programme you can see at a glance where the main Mueca stages (El Peñón, Plaza Europa, Muelle and Nicko) and performances will be. There are also themed streets. We’ll explain you what this is all about:

Calle de la Palabra, the street of the word (Calle La Hoya): The storytellers are the main protagonists in this street.

Calle del Ingenio, the street of wit (Calle San Juan): Here the whole family will have a lot of fun; performances of clowns, magicians and music parades will take place.

Calle de la Música, the street of music (Paseo de San Telmo and Punta del Viento): Two stages, in San Telmo and Punta del Viento, will offer you the best of live music: ska, rock, pop, classical…

Calle del Movimiento, the street of movement (Calle Quintana and Plaza de la Iglesia): Movement and dance lovers will be particularly pleased here and enjoy unique contemporary dance acts.

Calle Creativa, the street of creativity (Calle Mequinez): Drawing, graffiti, music and of course different art exhibitions will enchant Calle Mequinez, one of the historical places of Puerto de la Cruz.

MásMueca, the city revolves around the festival

Mueca fever is on everyone’s mind and so additional activities will be organised by many of the city’s restaurants and bars. Salsa workshops, theatre, concerts of all kinds… When the night falls, Mueca becomes MásMueca! In addition, these bars, restaurants and shops offer special discounts throughout the festival. Support them! They play an important role in the realisation of Mueca.

The accomplices of Mueca

The Mueca Festival would not be possible without the help of the many sponsors and partners. From organisers to collaborators and producers, everyone’s effort makes it possible to continue bringing the best shows to this unique location.

Accommodation during Mueca, where can I stay?

If you prefer to stay in Puerto de la Cruz, no problem. Enjoy different discounts on travel and accommodation.

And if you have any questions about your stay, how to get around or what to visit, the tourist information offices will be happy to help you.

Last but not least, we wish you a lot of fun! See you in Puerto de la Cruz!

What beach should we choose?

playa

During these days nothing seems more appealing than a good dip. But, where can we go? Tenerife, which has almost 70 km of beaches, most of them Blue Flag awarded due to the quality of their water, provided services and accessibility, is the ideal place. So, our only concern will be to decide which one.

In the South beaches usually have golden sands, while those in the North are almost black.

Here you can see a list of the beaches that have been awarded with the Blue Flag:

Golden sands: Playa de Fañabé and Playa del Duque , (in Adeje); El Médano and La Jaquita (in Granadilla de Abona).

Black sands: Troya I and II (in Arona); Playa San Juan (in Guía de Isora); La Arena (in Santiago del Teide); El Socorro (in Los Realejos); Playa Jardín and San Telmo (in Puerto de la Cruz); Arenisco (in San Cristóbal de La Laguna); La Arena (in Tacoronte).

However, we can always opt for wonderful natural pools. The most popular ones are in Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo (in La Laguna); San Juan de la Rambla (Charco de la Laja); Garachico (El Caletón) and San Miguel.

Besides, every single place offers lots of fun activities: windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, etc.

No matter what you choose, sand or natural pool, any option is great for relaxing and enjoying our fantastic coast.

But remember, it is important to measure out your sun exposure. Use sunscreen, drink plenty of fluids and, of course, look after our shores and keep them clean.

Tell us which one you finally chose!

Restaurants in Puerto de La Cruz – La Parrilla

Today we are up to Spanish cuisine made so well in the kitchens of the restaurants in Puerto de la Cruz.

A few days ago we had dinner at La Parrilla, a restaurant with Andalusian decoration  at Hotel Botanico, to try the tasting menu by chef José Marín.

I admit, I’m a fan of food, a # gastrovictim. I love to eat and of course, eat well.

Discovering a restaurant becomes adventure and charm is added, meeting who is behind each dish. In the case of the restaurant La Parrilla, seems chapters of a story, getting the same feeling that being stuck for a good book, you want to know what happens the next page and also do not want the pleasure reaches end, in my case, the dessert.

Determined to surprise me, I was in the hands of José Marín who decided for me what would be a fabulous dinner, please, check my menu:
