Tenerife Island: a stay by the water

Tenerife, the pearl of the Canaries, offers unforgettable experiences, and even more than you might think for those by the water. Ocean, beaches, coves, natural pools… with its natural diversity, spectacular scenery and crystal-clear waters, the island is a top destination for enjoying the therapeutic benefits of water and aquatic activities. As summer is coming, here’s a selection of refreshing spots, offering the best of freedom and escape.

Responsible “tête-à-tête” with cetaceans

In the south of the island of Tenerife, around 5km from the coast, you can discover one of the best spots in the world for admiring cetaceans in their natural habitat. These waters are home to a colony of bottlenose dolphins and around 400 pilot whales throughout the year. The area was declared a “Special Area of Conservation” in September 2011 and is included in the Natura 2000 network, which aims to ensure the survival of these species. The island of Tenerife also has a sustainability charter for these observations. As a result, it is possible to choose a boat trip with a responsible company; these companies are committed to respecting cetaceans and their environment, while offering a concrete and enriching tourist experience. An experience that promises extraordinary emotions, such as feeling free in the sea and in direct connection with the wildlife!

Unusual swimming in natural pools

These unique spots on the island, with their capricious shapes created by volcanic rock, offer small natural pools in which to bask and once again be in real contact with nature. The view is splendid, with mountains reaching for the sky and waves crashing against the edge of these natural pools. Head to Bajamar or Punta del Hidalgo to enjoy the therapeutic properties of their crystal-clear salt water, and why not take in the sunset for some exceptional entertainment…

A spectacular water ride beneath the cliffs

You can explore the island’s coastline by kayak all year round. It’s an ideal way to discover unusual places that can only be reached by water, such as the impressive cliffs of Los Gigantes, to the west of Tenerife. While paddling, you can admire a landscape created by volcanic eruption and the erosion of wind and sea. Visiting them from the sea offers a unique and spectacular perspective, as well as a relaxing moment lulled by the hollow of the waves. And why not take a dip in the natural caves and coves for a truly immersive experience of total well-being!

Adrenalin-pumping kite surfing on one of the island’s most beautiful beaches

One of the most popular water sports is kite surfing. In Tenerife, you can practice it all year round, and more specifically in the El Médano area, where the wind blows 300 days a year and the water temperature is temperate. El Médano is one of the most charming beaches in the south of the island. It is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. It stands out from the rest for the beauty of its fine grey sand, and the magnificent view it affords of the Montaña Roja volcanic cone. Kiters from all over Europe flock here to enjoy these unique conditions. National and international championships are held here. Skimming the water, feeling like you’re flying, getting your adrenalin pumping, all while enjoying an idyllic setting… what better way to experience the island intensely?

Marvel at an unspoilt paradise: the wild Benijo beach and its black sand

If you love nature in its purest form, a visit to Benijo beach is a must. Here, you can revel in an exceptional wilderness setting with dreamy views of the Roques de Anaga. The sunsets are magical, especially when the surf mixes with the red of the horizon and the silhouettes of the volcanic rocks emerging from the sea bed. Its black sand, derived from the volcanic origins of the archipelago, makes it all the more spectacular and mysterious. Benijo is the most isolated beach in the Taganana area (El Roque de las Bodegas and Almáciga). It can be reached on foot via a footpath with steps. By car, you can park nearby, near several restaurants where you can sample typical island dishes.
