The five most spectacular beach sunsets in Tenerife

Sometimes we get lost in our search for the perfect beach sunset; that ideal moment to share with you. It is easy to forget that it is our visitors who best know which corners of our island to visit. So, instead of giving you our selection, we decided to highlight the  beach sunsets that are most recommended by travelers to Tenerife.

Benijo Beach

“There is no other spot like it, so magical, exciting, so wild and so surprising. It is a mythical beach” says Julián. We get it; Benijo is one of those beaches with a unique magnetism that makes locals and strangers alike fall in love with it.

Julian, one of hundreds of travelers to recommend Benijo, gives some good advice: “To go and enjoy it, it is mandatory to check the tides; especially the low tides, which is when the beach is at its biggest and widest”.

Las Vistas Beach

Although we have cheated a bit and visited  at dawn, Las Vistas shines at both ends of the day and is  one of south Tenerife’s flagship beaches. You’ll see why after watching the sun rise and set from the same spot.

When the sun rises, the sky is flooded with gold, while on special occasions, it dyes the entire horizon purple. For Mali, Las Vistas beach is “the best of Tenerife. Fine white sand and crystal clear water. I’ve been coming to this beach for about 15 years. I repeat almost every year”.

El Médano Beach

Isabel García accurately describes El Médano in the Ocho Leguas blog as “the town with the most kites in Tenerife”. Kite flyers join windsurfers, kitesurfers and other wind-based sports enthusiasts to create a playful dance over the ocean. Montaña Roja, the Red Mountain, is the perfect backdrop to sunset at El Medano.

Garden Beach

If Tenerife in itself is a paradise, Puerto de la Cruz is a mini paradise within. It’s a city that retains its genuine seaside friendliness and draws visitors back year after year to pretty Playa Jardín.

Jordi describes it as “one of the best beaches in Tenerife, with fine black sand .. Very long and wide to play ball, tennis, etc…”. Maria agrees, stating that, “I loved this beach because of how black it is and the contrast of the gardens. It is a very nice place to swim or just to take a walk.”

El Duque Beach

To finish, we visit what is perhaps one of the most paradisiacal beaches in Tenerife. Sophianne says that, “if you want to relax in paradise, this is your beach. Whenever I can, I go in the morning to take an early dip in the transparent waters. It’s also a beautiful place to walk at sunset and take photos.”

So there you have it. The five best beach sunset spots in Tenerife. All that’s left is to invite you to visit them and see if you can take that perfect photo to match. It’s not that difficult!

Our favourite beaches in Tenerife for 2019

The beaches of Tenerife are undoubtedly a must for 2019. Whether you are looking for water sports, places to relax and unwind or you prefer lively beaches where you can have fun… In Tenerife you will find exactly what you are looking for.

Beaches for sports enthusiasts

We recently released Tenerife’s “Sports Calendar” for 2019, with many events for every taste and discipline, some even on beaches like El Medano or Las Americas!

El Médano, the favourite beach for windsurfing

Playa De Tenerife El Medano

On this famous beach in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, the World PWA Windsurfing Championship will be held. Last year participated more than 70 professionals. If you love windsurfing then El Médano is your place to go. It is one of the most colourful and peculiar landscapes in the south of Tenerife.

Beach Playa de Las AméricasPlaya De Tenerife Las Americas

Perhaps the best known place for water sports lovers is the “Izquierda de la Palmera”. It’s one of the island’s famous waves, therefore the Las Americas Pro attracts professional surfers from around the world to attend the WSL World Surf League event in February. Some interesting beaches you can find in this area are El Camisón beach and Las Vistas beach.

Family beaches

For a child there is nothing better than spending a great day on the beach. Building sand castles, playing ball games or just swimming in the sea turn a simple day in the sun into an oasis of fun. In Tenerife, there is a big variety of family beaches.

Beach Playa de La Pinta

Playa De Tenerife La Pinta

With a calm swell thanks to its breakwater and a wide range of activities (inflatable trampoline castles in the water, jet skiing, diving …), La Pinta beach is one of the most popular beaches to enjoy with the family in the south of Tenerife. A great option if you are in Costa Adeje!

Beach Playa de Las Teresitas

Playa De Tenerife Las Teresitas

One of the favourite beaches for locals and tourists alike is undoubtedly the beach Las Teresitas. There is hardly any waves on the main beach and its size invites to enjoy long walks with the family. You can even rent a boat and enjoy the beach from the water.

Beaches for hiking

If you would like to explore the natural trails of Tenerife (or even participate in the Tenerife Walking Festival), then many hiking trails have a refreshing reward for the sweaty effort: a natural beach.

Beach Playa de Antequera

Playa De Tenerife Antequera

This beach can only be reached via a difficult path starting from the hostel Albergue de Montes de Anaga or by boat in a trip of almost an hour from Santa Cruz. Its clear and calm waters, in harmony with the imposing rock of Antequera, offering impressive views that are a real treat after the strenuous walk.

Beach Playa de Los Roques

Playa De Tenerife Los Roques

At the end of the path of Rambla de Castro (easier than the previous one of Antequera) you reach this curious stone beach: the beach Los Roques. If you are a lover of photography, then you should not miss the sunset, very impressive!

Beaches to relax

Sometimes we just need rest and relaxation, we have to escape the hustle and bustle of the big cities and just take refuge in a natural sanctuary, only accompanied by the sound of the sea.

Beach Playa de Benijo

Playas De Tenerife Benijo

Playa Benijo is possibly the most photogenic beach in Tenerife. You have to see this fantastic colour spectacle of the sunset, how well it harmonises with the famous rocks. This sight is a true stress killer.

Beach Playa de El Bollullo

Playas De Tenerife El Bollullo

This small beach in La Orotava is located in one of the quietest corners in the north of Tenerife. Only 200 metres wide, it is a perfect retreat, where you will change the noise of the city by the sound of the sea.

And you? What kind of beach do you prefer?

Tenerife beaches in winter

The first image that comes to our minds when we think of Tenerife is Mount Teide, the sun and of course the intense blue sea.

Indeed, Tenerife is a holiday destination with brilliant beaches surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. We think of unspoilt landscapes with black lava sand. By the way, the black colour is due to the minerals such as basalt.

Tenerife is the perfect place to escape the cold winter, to feel the warmth of the sun on our skin and enjoy the sea breeze. Undoubtedly a luxury destination that will delight those holidaymakers who want to soak up the sun and refill their vitamin D storage.

The island is pleased by a privileged climate. The winter temperatures can easily reach 24º, enough for a day at the beach. We invite you on a little tour to some of these beautiful beaches with exotic volcanic sand.

Las Gaviotas

The beach Las Gaviotas, which is located near the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is not only ideal for sunbathing, but also for enjoying nature – definitely worth a visit.

It’s easy to get there by car. You first go to San Andrés and then to Igueste de San Andrés. As the beach is very accessible, it is also suitable for children.

El Socorro

The beach in Los Realejos, a municipality in the north of Tenerife, is the perfect beach for surfers who want to conquer the sea all day long.

This black lava-sand beach offers an unbeatable view of the rugged coastline of Tenerife north. Our insider tip are the beautiful sunsets which can be seen from here.

In addition, it is easy to reach, its waters have a good quality and sanitary facilities are available. Therefore, the Socorro has also been awarded with the Blue Flag.

Punta Larga

The beach Punta Larga is made of black sand and stones, its waters are clear and calm. Additionally, it has a great beach promenade that leads to Candelaria along the coast. Restaurants, shops and ice cream parlors invite for a long walk with small breaks.

You can sunbathe in one of the three bays that form the beach of Las Caletillas, or linger on the small floating woody islands.

To get to these beaches, take the road from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Taganana. They are a bit far from the capital, but definitely worth a visit. First you come to the beach El Roque de las Bodegas with the rock formations of Anaga. It’s black, dark lava-sand is unprecedented. After the beach El Roque de las Bodegas you reach the beach of Almáciga.

It is a beach for nature fans and surfer lovers. The landscape of Anaga is a jewel still to be discovered; untouched wild nature.

Playa Jardin

The Playa Jardín complex, consisting of the beaches Playa Jardín, Playa Chica and Punta Brava, is one of the most emblematic places of Puerto de la Cruz and of the island Tenerife.

Playa Jardín was designed by the great artist César Manrique.

A garden landscape with exotic plant species, waterfalls and stone caves framed by the La Orotava Valley and sometimes event Mount Teide can be seen in the background. In addition, this unique black lava beach is right next to the world-famous Loro Parque. The three beaches also are awarded with the Blue Flag.

El Bollullo

The Bollullo beach, in the municipality La Orotava, is an unspoilt natural beach that captivates us with its wild charm, the black sand and volcanic formations. It is the perfect place to recover from our hectic life. Due to its strong swell, it is popular for surfing, but beach guests should enjoy it with caution; pay attention to the flag!

Playa de El Medano

El Médano is one of the most beautiful beaches in the south of Tenerife and is located in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. This beach is characterised by the beauty of the fine, gray sand and the majestic view of the volcanic cone Montaña Roja, which is the closest to the city and especially suitable for families.

The area furthest from the town is ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. This beach usually hosts world-renowned championships such as the windsurfing and kitesurfing World Cups.

Playa de Ajabo

This beach has recently been prepared for swimming. The black sand and the volcanic rock gardens form an interesting contrast with the sea. There are umbrellas, loungers, showers, kiosks, toilets and changing rooms. It is a very quiet beach with moderate waves, all year round.
