The Qualifying Series (colloquially known as QS) are a must for any surfer who wants to compete in the Olympus of Waves. The athletes participating in the QS will do so with the goal of achieving one of the award-winning and limited places of the World Championship Tour.

The World Surfing League Association (WSL as a short form) organises QS championships around the world. Las Americas Pro was the first test of the year 2019 that covers Europe.

The so-called “Spanish Left” or Izquierda de la Palmera is the place chosen for the second consecutive year to host this event, a surf spot on a volcanic ground with waves ranging from 1 to 3 metres. It is also located in one of the most important tourist enclaves in the south of the island, with numerous leisure activities and a pleasant temperature throughout the year.

About 150 surfers from around the world gathered on the stage of Las Americas Pro during six days of disputed tests. The championship was broadcast live on WSL’s official YouTube channel, with thousands of views and live comments from hundreds of internet surfers, who connected to see the great atmosphere and the pleasant climate of Tenerife.

In the men’s final two Frenchmen Paul Cesar Distinguin and Timothee Bisso competed against eachother. Timothee Bisso secured the victory with 15.10 points, thanks to a big wave that brought him directly 8.33 points.

In the women’s final, the Basque Leticia Canales and Daniela Baldini from Tenerife fought to win the championship. In a tight final with only 1.5 points difference, the local hero Daniela Boldini ended up winning and earned the cheers of the audience.

For the first time, the amount of prize money in both categories is the same, to create an egalitarian championship in which both women and men are treated equally.

There are many routes in Tenerife where you can test your limits, from the Atlantic coast up to 2,000 metres of altitude difference.

One of the most complex tours is route no. 2 in the north of the island. There you visit the municipalities of La Orotava, La Laguna, Tacoronte, El Sauzal, La Matanza, La Victoria and Santa Ursula. The route has a total distance of 98 kilometres with an accumulated ascent of 2,727 challenging vertical metres, especially in the ascents to the Mount Teide National Park.

Although not all routes are hard or difficult, in Tenerife you can choose the route that best suits your abilities and possibilities. Route no. 6, for example, is of low difficulty and starts in Costa Adeje. Its length is 70 kilometres and covers regions of Arona, Granadilla, El Médano or Las Galletas.

Another of the challenges that you can take on in Tenerife is to equip yourself with the best mountain bike and launch yourself to one of the five forest routes that make up the network of natural tracks on the island.

Most of these trails pass through the Corona Forestal, the largest nature reserve in the Canary Islands. As a general rule, cyclists can ride the forest trails without restriction, so no special permit is required. If you are looking for a real challenge, we recommend the BC-1 with a total of 84 kilometres on the main route and another 53 kilometres through the 13 branches and variants. It is the island’s largest route as it traverses the entire northern slope of Tenerife and crosses up to 15 municipalities and six nature reserves.

You can also try a shorter route like the BC-3. It is only 9 kilometres long and runs through the pine forests of Chío through the municipalities of Santiago del Teide and Guía de Isora.

What do I need for cycling in Tenerife?

A bike, of course! If you can not or do not want to bring your own, no problem, there are a lot of companies that offer rental and support services and help you choose the best options and routes. Also, several hotels on the island, such as the Route Active Hotel, are specialised in active tourism and have their own services to make sure your stay adapts to your own needs.

For groups over 50 cyclists a special permit is required, which can be requested at Carreteras del Cabildo de Tenerife or by the Island Federation of Cycling.

Where to practice paragliding in Tenerife?

In Tenerife there are several paragliding takeoff and landing spots, divided into north (Los Realejos), southwest (Adeje) and east (Güímar). In the 360º panorama you can see the area of ​​La Corona, one of the most famous starting points. As soon as you take off you can admire the entire La Orotava valley in all its splendor.

Other relevant areas for paragliding are Ifonche (Vilaflor), Taucho (Adeje), Izaña (from where you can land both in the north and in the south), the Güímar hillside or the Fasnia volcano.

Izaña‘s takeoff point is one of the most famous and sought-after, as it is 2,300 metres above sea level. It is a unique flight because it starts with direct views of Mount Teide and you can land in Puerto de la Cruz in the north as well as in Güímar in the south. When to do paragliding in Tenerife?

The weather conditions in Tenerife make it possible to practise paragliding actually all year round. However, the best time for experienced pilots is in the months of October to May.

Some landing areas, especially those that involve beaches, are only available during the winter months. So if you want to descend on a beach, plan your flight during the winter season.
