El Médano, an ideal place for windsurfing

Sarah Quita PWA Tenerife 2019

Tenerife has several ideal places for windsurfing. The beach of El Cabezo, where the PWA World Cup Tenerife was held, is one of the most popular places to practise this sport on the island, but also one of the most demanding in terms of technical level. Luckily, there are several windsurfing centres where you can not only rent equipment, but also receive training classes to learn how to master the board.

What are you waiting for? In Tenerife you have a sports universe at your fingertips.

Our favourite beaches in Tenerife for 2019

The beaches of Tenerife are undoubtedly a must for 2019. Whether you are looking for water sports, places to relax and unwind or you prefer lively beaches where you can have fun… In Tenerife you will find exactly what you are looking for.

Beaches for sports enthusiasts

We recently released Tenerife’s “Sports Calendar” for 2019, with many events for every taste and discipline, some even on beaches like El Medano or Las Americas!

El Médano, the favourite beach for windsurfing

Playa De Tenerife El Medano

On this famous beach in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, the World PWA Windsurfing Championship will be held. Last year participated more than 70 professionals. If you love windsurfing then El Médano is your place to go. It is one of the most colourful and peculiar landscapes in the south of Tenerife.

Beach Playa de Las AméricasPlaya De Tenerife Las Americas

Perhaps the best known place for water sports lovers is the “Izquierda de la Palmera”. It’s one of the island’s famous waves, therefore the Las Americas Pro attracts professional surfers from around the world to attend the WSL World Surf League event in February. Some interesting beaches you can find in this area are El Camisón beach and Las Vistas beach.

Family beaches

For a child there is nothing better than spending a great day on the beach. Building sand castles, playing ball games or just swimming in the sea turn a simple day in the sun into an oasis of fun. In Tenerife, there is a big variety of family beaches.

Beach Playa de La Pinta

Playa De Tenerife La Pinta

With a calm swell thanks to its breakwater and a wide range of activities (inflatable trampoline castles in the water, jet skiing, diving …), La Pinta beach is one of the most popular beaches to enjoy with the family in the south of Tenerife. A great option if you are in Costa Adeje!

Beach Playa de Las Teresitas

Playa De Tenerife Las Teresitas

One of the favourite beaches for locals and tourists alike is undoubtedly the beach Las Teresitas. There is hardly any waves on the main beach and its size invites to enjoy long walks with the family. You can even rent a boat and enjoy the beach from the water.

Beaches for hiking

If you would like to explore the natural trails of Tenerife (or even participate in the Tenerife Walking Festival), then many hiking trails have a refreshing reward for the sweaty effort: a natural beach.

Beach Playa de Antequera

Playa De Tenerife Antequera

This beach can only be reached via a difficult path starting from the hostel Albergue de Montes de Anaga or by boat in a trip of almost an hour from Santa Cruz. Its clear and calm waters, in harmony with the imposing rock of Antequera, offering impressive views that are a real treat after the strenuous walk.

Beach Playa de Los Roques

Playa De Tenerife Los Roques

At the end of the path of Rambla de Castro (easier than the previous one of Antequera) you reach this curious stone beach: the beach Los Roques. If you are a lover of photography, then you should not miss the sunset, very impressive!

Beaches to relax

Sometimes we just need rest and relaxation, we have to escape the hustle and bustle of the big cities and just take refuge in a natural sanctuary, only accompanied by the sound of the sea.

Beach Playa de Benijo

Playas De Tenerife Benijo

Playa Benijo is possibly the most photogenic beach in Tenerife. You have to see this fantastic colour spectacle of the sunset, how well it harmonises with the famous rocks. This sight is a true stress killer.

Beach Playa de El Bollullo

Playas De Tenerife El Bollullo

This small beach in La Orotava is located in one of the quietest corners in the north of Tenerife. Only 200 metres wide, it is a perfect retreat, where you will change the noise of the city by the sound of the sea.

And you? What kind of beach do you prefer?

PWA windsurfing World Cup – El Médano 2018

This summer elite water sportsmen and sportswomen came together again on the beach of El Médano in the south of Tenerife. From August 5th to 11th and for the eighth year in a row the PWA windsurfing World Cup took place in the discipline “waves”. Challenging the laws of physics, more than 70 people from more than 18 different countries participated: 48 men, 19 women and 17 new talents in the junior category – all athletes who practise this demanding water sport with love and passion.

Windsurfing World Championship in El Médano

The coastal town of El Médano was full of life this month as hundreds of people gathered to watch the spectacle. Councilor for Tourism, Maria Candelaria Rodriguez, said that El Médano is “one of the best destinations for water sports of this kind”, and the participating men and women proved that with their breathtaking jumps. El Médano and the area of El Cabezo have always been a meeting place for this sport due to the length of the beach and the constant strong winds – simply a paradise for windsurfing! In addition, it is a wonderful place to enjoy the typical Canarian cuisine, with fresh fish and seafood. Tenerife has excellent beaches for windsurfers, such as Playa de Las Américas and La Tejita.

The PWA World Cup Tenerife was presented by the mayor, José Domingo Regalado, the head of the Sports Club and organiser of the event, Daniel Bruch, the Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Canary Islands Government (Gobierno de Canarias), Cristóbal de la Rosa, Deputy President and Tourism Adviser of the Government of Tenerife (Cabildo de Tenerife), Alberto Bernabé, and the Councilor for Tourism, María Candelaria Rodriguez.

The opening of the event took place on August 5th with a rhythmic parade of Bloko del Valle. Under applause of the public, the participants presented themselves with the flags of the countries represented by them.

Adrenaline and emotion to the end

The youngest were the first to participate in the competition on Monday afternoon. María Morales (Médano) and Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Gran Canaria) started first. Alexia won this heat by a hair. In the male sub 13, Tobias Bjorna (Denmark) and Carlos Kiefer (Gran Canaria) faced their jumps; Tobias beat Carlos. In the sub 17, Julia Pascuale (Pozo Izquierdo), Mar de Arce Sánchez and Alexia Kiefer competed against each other, Julia became first, Alexia second and Mar third. The male sub 17 was held in two parts. In the first heat, the Japanese Takuma won, second place gained Jose Casanova and the third took Adrián. In the second heat, Marino Pascuale from Gran Canaria gained the first place ahead of Mike Friedl and Aaron Leonard, who finished third. In the sub 20 Tessa Nikki Coraline and Julia Pascuale competed, Julia was first.

The two qualifying finals were really exciting. The champions Iballa Ruano and Víctor Fernández were crowned in the women’s and men’s categories respectively. Sarah-Quita Offringa was first in the women’s category, followed by Iballa Ruano, second, Daida Ruano and Sniady with the third and fourth place respectively. In the men’s category, Lewis qualified with a wonderful second place and places three and four took Campello and Stone. Last year’s winner, Philip Köster, surprised with his elimination as he could not overcome Campello. Nevertheless, he left us some incredible memories. The huge waves and jumps really gave the audience in El Cabezo a tremendous spectacle.

Congratulations to the winners and of course to all participants, organisers and staff. In the meantime, until the world championship takes place again next year, we just go on windsurfing or try other sports. Because here in the south of Tenerife you can enjoy the sun, the beach, the water, the wind and the waves all year round. Until next year!

El Médano danced to the sound of the waves, PWA World Cup

Two characteristics make El Médano an attractive place for windsurfers: the regular trade winds (300 days a year) and endless beaches with natural sand. They stretch more than 3 kilometres along the coast and have a pleasant water temperature. El Médano is undoubtedly one of the coolest corners of the island, the windsurf capital and the cradle of kitesurfing in Tenerife – a popular “tourist sports area” for active travellers.

The Windsurf World Championship “PWA World Cup Tenerife” was held for the seventh time in a row in August. More than 90 participants from 18 different nations came to Tenerife, ready to dance the waves in the most spectacular and sportive way.

tf17_wv_sarah_quita_offringa-768x512

In general, Tenerife is an extremely sporty island; all kind of sports can be practised all year round in nature such as water sports: windsurfing, surfing, boogie boarding, kite surfing, paddle surfing, diving, swimming, fishing… And for those who like to have firm ground under their feet, go running, cycling, walking or conquer the skies with paragliding.

kitesurf-medano-03

Today, however, it is all about water sports. Kite surfing or kite boarding is also becoming increasingly popular.

It has advanced much in its techniques thanks to the new equipment which makes it much more handy and less dangerous than it used to be.

We see more and more comets along the coast of our island. Kiters are looking for new beaches where they can practise this fun sport that connects with the sea, the air and with yourself at the same time.

Another sport that is also “trendy” is paddle surfing. It’s soothing and relaxing, but it is no less exhausting, because many muscles are involved in the paddling and you do not notice it at the beginning. However, it is really fun to explore the coast, alone or with friends, and discover new corners.

It has been a very exciting time at the sea and in a healthy environment dominated by the ocean and the wind.

Now it is time to dream of the PWA World Cup Tenerife 2018!

Intensive Tenerife Part 3

A 4-day trip – don’t be a tourist, be a traveller!

By plane, car, boat and the most authentic one: by our own feet

From the stars in the skies to the stars of the ocean.

This morning we went to a breathtakingly beautiful place on the west coast of the island, called Los Gigantes, or “Cliffs of the Giants” in English…

Los Gigantes

We swapped our car for a boat and our casual wear for swimwear – can you guess what we did next? Yes, we went journeying out on the Atlantic Ocean where we enjoyed the warm sun, swam in the sea and were overwhelmed by the Cliffs of the Giants. It is hard not to be impressed by the volcanic walls which reach up to 600 meters high and fall dramatically into the ocean. You feel so small looking up at their walls yet so empowered by the experience at the same time…

Apart from the stunning scenery, we did something that I never expected to do at sea in this part of Europe: whale and dolphin watching!
Tenerife has become the most important place in Europe for spotting whales in their natural habitat.
The south-west of Tenerife is home to twenty-one different species of marine mammals that live close by to the coast or are journeying through on vacation like us ;-).
Some of the species you can observe are Bottlenose dolphins and Short-finned pilot whales which settle in the same place all year.

Whale and dolphin watching

It was really amazing to see them jumping out of the water so close to our boat with the families or pods of whales proudly presenting us their cute babies (calves). On board, the children’s eyes sparkled with joy and the adults were moved by the dance of the Cetaceans.

whale and doplhin watching 2
As we drove further out to sea, somebody shouted something I struggled to understand at first…all my fellow passengers’ eyes had turned to watch the horizon. And then I saw a big water fountain and a huge dark shadow… I couldn’t believe it! We were one of the few lucky ones that day to observe the biggest traveller of the marine mammals – the giant blue whale! What an experience!
So, when you are in Tenerife, take this chance to see up close marine mammals in their habitat; I only can not recommend this highly enough to you!

Apart from whale and doplphin watching you can do a lot more activities in the clear blue Atlantic Ocean: kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle surfing, sailing, diving…

Windsurf

Sailing

Kayaking

Go on and try something new! A holiday is the best time to challenge yourself.
And this is exactly what I will do on my next trip to Tenerife: diving. I can’t wait to go underwater and see more marine life thriving in their ocean home.

Buceo
So, all there is left is to leave you with all the best water sports companies and diving centres on the island.

This was our third day exploring this little-big island. I can’t wait to tell you about the secrets of Isla Baja, which we discover on the last day of this amazing 4-day-trip. Keep on reading 😉

Yours, Eileen
