Iberostar Grand Hotel Mencey-Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Starters at Hotel Mencey
Starters at Hotel Mencey

The quintessential Hotel in  Santa Cruz, presents a totally fresh and modern atmosphere after its recent opening.

Mencey is an urban hotel, very social and stylish. In the words of one of the  bartenders, “The Mencey Hotel is ideal for an anniversary celebration or a relaxing day with friends type Sex and the City “.

Perfect for a drink, with a magnificent menu of 45 Gin Tonics of own creation or one of its fascinating tasting menus where Canarian cuisine reinvents traditional dishes unaltered.

EL Rincon de Juan Carlos – Los Gigantes

Although the owner does not presume if it shows satisfaction if reminded that his establishment, received the award for best restaurant in the Canaries.

This restaurant in the cobbled town of Los Gigantes, is probably the best kept gastro secret on the island.

With genuine similarities between their professional and family history and family Roca,  is also a cause of displacement: “People have to want to come here for dinner, they have to start enjoying before  booking a table”.

Juan Carlos believes in quality  with absolute firmness and knows the product he  works with  perfectly. Once in his  kitchen, simple, magic starts inventing dishes as only an artist can. Textures on the edge, fragrances that appear, leading to gastro flavors pleasure in the most friendly  atmosphere of Tenerife.

No Michelin stars, but the level  is to the height of a two or three star, no doubt.

My suggestion: Be surprised and calls its tasting menu, you will not forget in life.

Perfect for small group celebrations or couples without losing an atmosphere of style and good taste, the site is able to adapt to your occasion, surprisingly.

La Laja and Chef Pablo Aznar

Cava interesting and creative dishes inspired unexaggerated culturas.Una diverse cuisine, creative and select that focuses on art and modernity where quality is unquestionable.

La Laja, is a greatrestaurant  with gastronomic luxuries able to seduce the most demanding.

Backpackers in Tenerife at Lagarto Backpackers

Backpacking is a quite interesting way of travelling but….is Tenerife backpackers welcome?

Of course! There are many affordable places all over the island and recently proper hostels are opening.

While I was looking for a place to spend  a family weekend I found Lagarto Backpackers, between Tejina and Valle Guerra in the North of Tenerife.

I love that area, it’s not crowded, there’s plenty to do and the price was afordable, so I booked.

Lagarto Backpackers is a small  youth hostel ( I’m 40, but I’ve been  a backpacker for years ), where you can share or book your private room, what I did.

When we arrived we had a great warm welcome by Rey,  a fabulous labrador and Vitto, one of the owners, who on the phone assured and guaranteed me the hostel wasn’t fully booked and there was no party going on.

My daughter, just disapeared with Rey, her new bestest friend, to check the garden and the pool, while I started my own inspection of the place.

For me everything was just fine.

  • Clean place
  • Pool
  • Free wifi
  • BBQ
  • Friendly international atmosphere

The great value of this hostel is not the rooms or facilities, it’s the atmosphere.

For 10€ we could join other guests for dinner, what we happily did. We had great Italian evening meal with an interesting group with people from Russia, Netherlands, Italy, Chile and Spain and shared tips about Tenerife and our countries. It was such a cultural exchange, something you might not get in hotels or similar.

Backpacking is sharing, is like  living in comunity even if you are travelling solo, and that’s simply  what we did at Lagarto hostel.

Being based in this hostel we spent some time in the area and took some of the other guests with us.

We went to natural pools in Jover and el Pris

and enjoyed great local  seafood : lapas, octopus , camarons…  at Punta del Hidalgo and EL Pris and went to local market in Tegueste on Sunday morning  to get fruit and veges from the area.

Just a simple weekend, in a simple hostel, with simple meals ….but awesome experience
