On 5 January every year, many towns across Tenerife stage Three Wise Men Parades. In this unique tradition, the Three Wise Men from the East (the Biblical Magi) go down the streets on their spectacular floats, greeting children and grown-ups alike. Some of the most enjoyable parades take place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital city, as well as in towns like Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava. In addition, there are side activities like snacks with hot chocolate, street markets and shows.
Every year, on 6 January or Epiphany, children in Catholic countries wake up to find the presents brought to them by the Three Wise Men. Those who have been naughty the year before, however, will only find coal instead! In Tenerife, before visiting every child’s home with their presents at night, the Magi take to the streets, oozing hope and joy.
