One of the big Carnival events in Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes place on Wednesday, 14 February. It is known in Spanish as “Entierro de la Sardina” (Burial of the Sardine). Marking the end of the Carnival season, it fills the streets with widows mourning the “death” of Carnival (Don Carnal) in the form of a sardine carried on a special float. The choice of the sardine has to do with the city’s fishing tradition. At the end, the float is burned as a form of farewell to Carnival.
