On 2 March, the Adeje Auditorium is staging a show whose fictional characters are based on real persons with a connection to Spanish matador Manolete and his death in 1947. Written by Alicia Montesquiu and directed by Gabriel Olivares, Las hermanas de Manolete explores the relationships between the bullfighter and the women around him. In so doing, it delves into Francoist Spain, when women were little more than chattels of their husbands, fathers or brothers, barely allowed to go outside without the latter’s consent. Against this background, the women around Manolete enjoyed some freedom, getting around and getting things done (or undone) as they wished.
