The Bonfires of San Juan are celebrated in several towns across Tenerife on the 23rd of June, coinciding with the shortest night of the year and the summer solstice.
The bonfires are lit to purify the soul and ward off evil spirits, and wishes can be thrown into the fire. Traditionally, this festival marks the start of the summer. Bonfires may only be lit in designated and authorised places.
