CajaCanarias is staging an exhibition focusing on French painter and illustrator Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Divided into four sections – City Life, Illustration, The Circus and Nightlife –, the exhibition explores different aspects of Toulouse-Lautrec’s multi-faceted work, always connected to his attitude to life and his personal life.
The quintessential chronicler of life in the Parisian district of Montmartre, Toulouse-Lautrec shed light on the ridiculous, the decline of a social class and the perverse element in entertainment. His work reflects his life, and many characters from the latter – his family and friends, the people who inhabited the world of lights and shadows he felt attracted to – appear in the former.
