Altos de Trevejos Winery produces high-altitude wines that express the volcanic character and the unique microclimate of the area. The estate is located in the town of San Miguel de Abona, in a traditional 19th-century Canarian home which has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
This winery has 24 hectares of modern vineyards that use trellises to support the grape vines and 15 hectares of old vineyards in Llano de Trevejos where the vines are allowed to grow freely (as they were planted long before trellises were introduced). The vineyards are located at an altitude of 1,300 metres above sea level.
Altos de Trevejos is committed to organic and sustainable viticulture. The winery draws on the unique terroir and environmental conditions to bring grapes to the perfect level of ripeness while maintaining excellent vineyard health. It cultivates pre-phylloxera varieties (that is, varieties of wine grape that predate the phylloxera pest which devastated almost all of Europe’s vineyards in the 19th century). Both the vines’ origins and cultivation method follow the old ways, which endows this historic winemaking estate with unique oenological value.
Visits to the winery and vineyards are available. Visitors can learn about how the winery has passed from generation to generation, winemaking processes, grape varieties, volcanic soils and growing techniques at high altitudes. An exploration of the winery is an enriching and highly recommended experience.
