When can I sail in Tenerife?

You can enjoy both sailing and dinghy sailing in Tenerife year-round thanks to its mild climate and constant winds. However, the best time is from March to September due to the trade winds, which are ideal for more experienced sailors. From October to February, the winds are gentler, making them ideal for beginners or those who enjoy a more relaxed sailing experience.

What do I need to sail on the island?

To practice this sport, you will need a club or school that can provide you with the necessary infrastructure and equipment, such as:

  • Boats
  • Marinas
  • Access ramps
  • For safety reasons, it is recommended to wear a life jacket.

In addition, we recommend you to bring the following:

  • Appropriate clothing, such as a wetsuit if the water is cold, or technical nautical clothing (windbreaker, lycra, and shorts) in warmer climates.
  • Anti-slip footwear, such as booties or boat shoes, to prevent falls on board.
  • Sunscreen protection: waterproof cream, a cap with a strap, and sunglasses with a cord.
  • Sailing gloves to avoid chafing when handling ropes.
  • Water and snacks to stay hydrated and energised while sailing.
  • Waterproof bag to store your mobile phone, keys, or documents, and prevent them from getting wet or lost.

Do I need a permit to sail in Tenerife?

If you want to sail on your own, you will need permits, depending on the type of boat and its activity. You will need permits and a license for:

  • Sailboats over 6 meters in length
  • Motorboats

Can I learn to sail in Tenerife?

Tenerife is an ideal destination to start a sailing course or perfect your skills. Whether you are looking for a one-time experience or an official certification, you will find options for all levels. Many schools offer official courses and training for qualifications such as the Navigation License (Licencia de Navegación), PNB, or PER.

Can I rent sailboats and catamarans in Tenerife?

There are multiple sailboat and catamaran rental options on the island, both with or without a skipper, as well as small boats that do not require a license. In all cases, you must present your ID or passport, and if applicable, a sailing license, along with a form with the crew's information.
