Centuries before Christ, certain Greek thinkers believed that the mythical garden of the Hesperides was located in the Canary Islands. In their minds, they pictured the islands housing the heavenly garden in which the Hesperides – the daughters of Atlas – would guard the golden apples that grew on the trees. This golden fruit granted immortality when eaten and was the goal of one of the Twelve Labours of Hercules, which he obtained by tricking Atlas himself into picking them for him.
