Festival of Our Lady of Candelaria

On the 14th and 15th of August, Candelaria hosts the key events of the festivities in honour of the patron saint of the Canary Islands.

The August festival of Our Lady of Candelaria, known as “the festival of the natives”, is one of the most important religious celebrations in the archipelago. On the 14th of August, at dusk, the Guanche Ceremony is held in the Plaza de la Basílica, re-enacting the indigenous people's discovery of the icon. On the 15th of August, the solemn procession, the High Mass and the pilgrimage of thousands of worshippers from all over the island take place. Admission to the events is free.
