Deliverance of Valle de Guerra
The Deliverance of Valle de Guerra is one of the highlights of Our Lady of the Rosary Festival – a major cultural event in the form of a morality play, deeply rooted in the popular culture of the Canary Islands. It stands for the cultural identity of local people, who have known how to combine economic and social growth with strong ties to their ancestors.
The Deliverance has four parts: the historical background, describing the major events in Europe in the early 1570s; the prelude to battle on both the Christian and the Ottoman sides; the naval battle of Lepanto, when a fleet of the Holy League inflicted a major defeat on the Ottoman Empire in the Gulf of Patras; and the surrender of the vanquished fleet and their offering to Our Lady of the Rosary.
