In the context of its traditional Big Festival, La Orotava is hosting St Isidore the Farmer and Our Lady of the Head’s Procession. The procession is a popular event in the Canary Islands, full of colour and joy, drawing thousands of visitors who join locals to enjoy the traditional songs and dances, including the cheerful isas and the delicate folías.
During the procession, images of St Isidore the Farmer and Our Lady of the Head – the town’s patron saint and Patroness – are carried down the streets, as they are offered a sample of the fat of the land. The pilgrims are accompanied by wagons that remind onlookers of the event’s agricultural roots, and by bands of musicians. On the whole, the town is wrapped in the festive atmosphere that characterises popular traditions.
