Tenerife is part of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands
Tenerife is part of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, which includes the other islands in the archipelago. Since it is so far away from the mainland, many of the powers that are usually held by the Spanish Government are entrusted to the Autonomous Community for it to govern itself. The most important institution in the region is the Canarian Parliament, with fifteen MPs representing Tenerife. The main political parties are the Canarian Coalition (Coalición Canaria), the People's Party (Partido Popular) and the Canarian Socialist Party (PSOE).
