Short-finned pilot whale

A cetacean swimming in the southern waters of Tenerife

The south coast of the Island of Tenerife is home to a sizeable colony of short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). These whales belong to the Delphinidae family and recognisable for their short fins and their dark grey or black colouring. Tenerife's pilot whales measure 4 to 5 m (13 to 16 ft) and can weigh over 3,000 kg (6,600 lbs). You will be able to see them from one of the boats that set out specially for whale and dolphin watching, and sometimes from the coast. A series of strict regulations ensure that whale and dolphin watching is a respectful activity that preserves their habitat and lifestyle.
