Canarian Cleopatra

An endemic butterfly living in Tenerie's laurel forests

Tenerife's laurel forests are inhabited by the Canarian Cleopatra (Gonepteryx cleobule cleobule), an endemic species of butterfly. With a wing span of 60 to 68 mm (2.4 to 2.7 inches), this Cleopatra stands out for its bright colours: yellow and orange, though slightly paler in females, with small green and reddish tinges on the underside of the wing. The Canarian Cleopatra coexists with over 500 different species of butterflies in the whole archipelago.
