Pilgrimage of Socorro

This pilgrimage takes place in Güímar and is the longest-standing not only in Tenerife but in the entire Canary Islands. On 7 September every year, pilgrims journey all the way from the Church of San Pedro in the town centre to the chapel of the Virgin on the beach of El Socorro. In the afternoon, a celebration commemorates the moment when the virgin of Nuestra Señora del Socorro appeared to the Guanche people on the beach of Chimisay. On the following day, the figure of the virgin is once again carried to the town and returned to the church of San Pedro.
