Our favourite beaches in Tenerife for 2019

The beaches of Tenerife are undoubtedly a must for 2019. Whether you are looking for water sports, places to relax and unwind or you prefer lively beaches where you can have fun… In Tenerife you will find exactly what you are looking for.

Beaches for sports enthusiasts

We recently released Tenerife’s “Sports Calendar” for 2019, with many events for every taste and discipline, some even on beaches like El Medano or Las Americas!

El Médano, the favourite beach for windsurfing

Playa De Tenerife El Medano

On this famous beach in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, the World PWA Windsurfing Championship will be held. Last year participated more than 70 professionals. If you love windsurfing then El Médano is your place to go. It is one of the most colourful and peculiar landscapes in the south of Tenerife.

Beach Playa de Las AméricasPlaya De Tenerife Las Americas

Perhaps the best known place for water sports lovers is the “Izquierda de la Palmera”. It’s one of the island’s famous waves, therefore the Las Americas Pro attracts professional surfers from around the world to attend the WSL World Surf League event in February. Some interesting beaches you can find in this area are El Camisón beach and Las Vistas beach.

Family beaches

For a child there is nothing better than spending a great day on the beach. Building sand castles, playing ball games or just swimming in the sea turn a simple day in the sun into an oasis of fun. In Tenerife, there is a big variety of family beaches.

Beach Playa de La Pinta

Playa De Tenerife La Pinta

With a calm swell thanks to its breakwater and a wide range of activities (inflatable trampoline castles in the water, jet skiing, diving …), La Pinta beach is one of the most popular beaches to enjoy with the family in the south of Tenerife. A great option if you are in Costa Adeje!

Beach Playa de Las Teresitas

Playa De Tenerife Las Teresitas

One of the favourite beaches for locals and tourists alike is undoubtedly the beach Las Teresitas. There is hardly any waves on the main beach and its size invites to enjoy long walks with the family. You can even rent a boat and enjoy the beach from the water.

Beaches for hiking

If you would like to explore the natural trails of Tenerife (or even participate in the Tenerife Walking Festival), then many hiking trails have a refreshing reward for the sweaty effort: a natural beach.

Beach Playa de Antequera

Playa De Tenerife Antequera

This beach can only be reached via a difficult path starting from the hostel Albergue de Montes de Anaga or by boat in a trip of almost an hour from Santa Cruz. Its clear and calm waters, in harmony with the imposing rock of Antequera, offering impressive views that are a real treat after the strenuous walk.

Beach Playa de Los Roques

Playa De Tenerife Los Roques

At the end of the path of Rambla de Castro (easier than the previous one of Antequera) you reach this curious stone beach: the beach Los Roques. If you are a lover of photography, then you should not miss the sunset, very impressive!

Beaches to relax

Sometimes we just need rest and relaxation, we have to escape the hustle and bustle of the big cities and just take refuge in a natural sanctuary, only accompanied by the sound of the sea.

Beach Playa de Benijo

Playas De Tenerife Benijo

Playa Benijo is possibly the most photogenic beach in Tenerife. You have to see this fantastic colour spectacle of the sunset, how well it harmonises with the famous rocks. This sight is a true stress killer.

Beach Playa de El Bollullo

Playas De Tenerife El Bollullo

This small beach in La Orotava is located in one of the quietest corners in the north of Tenerife. Only 200 metres wide, it is a perfect retreat, where you will change the noise of the city by the sound of the sea.

And you? What kind of beach do you prefer?

Tenerife Film Commission is attending this year’s major events

EFM, Kidscreen, Cartoon Movie and Series Mania, our upcoming engagements

At Tenerife Film Commission we like telling you first-hand about all the reasons and advantages that make Tenerife an increasingly attractive place for animation and live action international projects. That’s why along with local production companies, we’re travelling to the most relevant events of the first quarter of the year: European Film Market (Berlinale), Kidscreen Summit, Cartoon Movie and Series Mania

We’re taking part in Kidscreen Summit, from 11 to 14 February in Miami (US), under the Animation from Spain umbrella. Four production companies are coming with us: 3 Doubles Producciones, B-Water Studios, Mondo TV Iberoamérica and Salero Animation Studio. We’re also attending Cartoon Movie in Burdeaux (France), from 5 to 7 March.

As for feature films and series, we can meet at the European Film Market and Drama Series Days (Berlin), from 9 to 12 February at the Cinema from Spain stand (MGB, C1). Orange Valley Canarias, Kikazaru 360 and Nu Boyana Canarias are joining us in the market. And finally, we’ll be at Series Mania (Lille, France), taking place from 25 to 27 March.

In Tenerife, production companies can enjoy 40% tax rebate for foreign production or a 45-40 % tax credit for Spanish productions or co-productions. In addition, you can establish your company in the Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC) and pay just 4% Corporate Income Tax, as opposed to 25% applicable in the rest of the country.

Apart from these advantages, production companies will also find valuable local talent, a large number of specialised production companies and technological tools like the Teide HPC supercomputer, the second most powerful in Spain, which makes rendering so much easier. But that’s not all! Tenerife offers you the chance to work in a kind, relaxing place, at the ideal temperature and surrounded by unique nature and plenty of leisure options while at the same time being in an executive professional environment plus having easy daily connections to the main cities in mainland Spain and Europe.

We’ll be at the European Film Market and Series Mania with Canary Islands Film, the Canary Islands film promotion umbrella.

The 2nd Premios Quirino is gaining momentum

Tenerife becomes the meeting point for Latin-American animation with the 2nd Quirino Awards to be held in April 2019

Awarded at Quirino’s prizes in 2018

A total of 244 feature films, series and short films from 16 countries have been entered for this second year. The awards aim at showcasing Latin American animation talent and industry.

With 60 and 49 films respectively, Spain and Brazil lead the number of entries. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic are joining us for the first time, making the list of “Quirino space” countries longer. The Quirino Awards is taking place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain on 5 and 6 April 2019.

Out of all the entries, a committee selects and nominates six works per category. The committee is made up by Polish Agnieszka Kowalewska, Irish Barry O´Donoghue, French Loïc Porter and Spaniards Paco Rodríguez and Zulay Rodríguez.

An international jury will choose three finalists for each category out of the films shortlisted; these finalists will compete for the awards on 6 April in Tenerife.

There are nine different categories: feature film, series, short film, school short film, innovative film, commissioned film, sound design and original score, visual development and animation design.

On the other hand, Latin American animation companies can apply for Foro de Coproducción Iberoamérica/Mundo [World/Latin America Co-production Forum]. The programme includes one to one meetings, group work meetings and different talks with the aim to continue strengthening a meeting point for Latin American animation companies. In 2018 the Forum brought together nearly 300 professionals and a group work meeting was carried out by Programa Ibermedia, which outlined the bases for a specific support line for animation. The first deadline to pre-register for the forum is 30 January.

For their part, with the challenge of thinking about regional animation, the Congreso Internacional de la Animación Iberoamericana [Latin American Animation International Conference] has opened a call for papers until 30 January 2019. Regulations are available on the Conference website. The papers selected will be announced on 14 February 2019.

At Ventana Sur Buenos Aires the launching of a Liga de la Animación Iberoamericana [Latin America Animation League] was announced. This is an alliance between Premios Quirino, Festival Pixelatl (México) and Animation! (Argentina). One of the finalists of 2018Animation! won the award in Buenos Aires and is coming to the 2019 Premios Quirino in Tenerife. That same project will then travel to Cuernavaca to take part in 2019 Pixelatl. The award includes plane ticket, accommodation and accreditation to all events. The winner was the series Dos pajaritos by Palermo Estudio – Uruguay and Can Can Club – Argentina. Directed by Alfredo Soderguit and Alejo Schettini.

The Quirino Awards are named after the creator of the first animation feature film, the Italian-Argentinian Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed “El Apóstol”, an Argentinian production where 58,000 hand-made drawings were used and shot in 35 mm, in addition to several scale models representing public buildings and streets of the city of Buenos Aires.

In 2018, the Mexican feature film “Ana y Bruno” by Carlos Carrera, the series “El hombre más chiquito del mundo” by Argentinian Juan Pablo Zaramella and the Spanish short film “Decorado” by Alberto Vázquez took the awards in the main categories.

3Doubles Producciones took part in the film ‘Daily Fables’ in 2018

Daily Fables has been the most popular premiere of all times of a children’s film in Holland

In 2018, 3Doubles Producciones took part in the production of the feature film Daily Fables, based on the series of the same name, which turned 50 in 2018.

Daily Fables has always been made with puppets and this is their first 3D experience where the initial approach has been kept by using characters and sets that look like sets and puppets made of furry and other fabrics. This has given it a different visual style. 3Doubles Producciones has been involved in rigging, layout and animation, whereas other processes like shading, lighting, etc. have been handled by other Tinker Group studios, the European company 3Doubles Producciones joined in April 2018. Thanks to the popularity of the feature in Holland and Belgium, they are set to start the production of the TV series in March 2019, in which 3Doubles Producciones will take care of rigging, layout and animation. Canarian actors and extras in international productions

The professionalism of local talent travels abroad

Shooting of “Familienurlaub mit Freunden” (English title: Family Holidays with Friends)

British local newspaper editor Barrie Mahoney, said that the Canary Islands´ tremendous energy and vitality boil down to its diversity of people all rubbing along happily with each other. Any casting director who works frequently across the seven islands would agree with Barrie. The islands’ colourful diversity is unequalled to most parts of Europe. As a leading service production company in the Canary Islands, Seven Islands Film has worked on film projects which required casts and extras from a broad spectrum of ethnic backgrounds besides European, including Indian, African and East Asian, to name a few. The company is now in pre-production of a television series for a major Swedish production company. The series is shooting with the Canary Islands doubling for Mexico, and several Canarian actors have been cast to play supporting roles. The Canarian actors will also be getting their first taste of acting outside Spanish soil as they will be travelling to Eastern Europe in early spring to join the major Swedish actors in studio filming.

As competition soars, service production is no longer just about employing experienced crew and state-of-the-art equipment. With offices in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, Seven Islands Film understands it is time to get creative and bold in order to cater for the needs of international producers, who come the Canary Islands for its diverse range of locations in close proximity. On German TV movie “Familienurlaub mit Freunden” (English title: Family Holidays with Friends) which was shot entirely in Tenerife, the company hired more than 100 extras for its highly choreographed crowd scenes.

As one of the longest running production companies in the Canary Islands, Seven Islands Film is equipped to provide full production services to shoots of all sizes of feature film, television drama and commercials.

The 40 % incentive is now even more attractive to animation and postproduction

Minimum expenditure required is brought down

In Tenerife, international feature films, series or animation productions can enjoy 40 % tax deduction. To be eligible, animation productions or films post-produced on the Island need only spend a minimum of 200,000 euros, instead of one million euros required up till now, which still applies to the rest of Spain. This major cut is included in Law 8/2018, of 5 November on the modification of the Canary Islands Economic and Tax Regime.

What are the basic requirements for international productions to benefit from the 40% incentive? First of all, the total budget has to amount to two million euros and a local production company to provide production services must be hired. If the film is shot on the island, a minimum of one million euros expenditure is required. However, if it is an animation production or only post-production is carried out on the island, the minimum amount required goes down to 200,000 euros. There is a wide range of eligible expenditure for shoots including all that related to the production of the film, from screenplay, first location scouting to editing and final cut. Lists of eligible expenditure for shoots and for animation are available.

There are plenty of excellent local production companies for this type of projects. Learn about them on the Film Commission’s professional directory. To find out more about tax incentives for film production in Tenerife, please see our film commission’s website.

The sports calendar of Tenerife 2019 is full of big events and that’s not surprising. Top athletes such as tennis players Dominic Thiem and Karolína Plíšková, both top 10 ATP and WTA, were training on the island for their tournaments this year, but they were not the only ones training with us.

Cyclists like Alberto Contador or Chris Froome; football teams such as Liverpool FC, Manchester City, FC Augsburg or even Olympic swimmers like Sarah Sjöström were in the training camp in Tenerife. Also, the Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018 was held on the island last year, with great success. Would you like to know what are the best sporting events in Tenerife this year?

Over 2,000 runners registered for the various modalities in 2018, highlighting the participation of the rarámuri (tarahumara = ethnicity from northern Mexico known for long-distance runs through deserts, canyons, mountains) Lorena Ramírez who finished third in the senior category. This year, the race will take place on June 8th and the registrations are already open.
