The ceremonial site of Guargacho

This archaeological settlement was found accidentally by a shepherd in April 1972. The unusual arrangement of the stones on the ground encouraged a series of archaeological excavations directed by Luis Diego Cuscoy, who interpreted their findings as representing a ceremonial site. He based his theory on the incineration pit, the furnaces and the two large stone slabs they found, though other researchers believe that the ceremonial site of Guarcacho was actually a settlement comprising several huts, such as those found in north Africa. The area now recreates the site exactly as it would have been when the Guanches used it, in an objective interpretation. This has been done with the intention of encouraging citizen engagement and bringing their heritage closer to the people.
